Finding a yogurt that’s actually healthy can be overwhelming! Here’s my top 5 tips to help clear the confusion, PLUS an energizing and nourishing superfood vegan vanilla coconut yogurt bowl recipe.
It’s full of texture, easy to customize depending on what’s in your pantry, and perfect whether you need an easy post-workout snack or are simply craving something sweet yet healthy. Oh, and it’s paleo-friendly, dairy-free, and refined sugar free to boot. Wee!
Hey to my favorite crew of fellow nutrition nerds and health nuts!
Did you think I forgot about you guys this week? Psssh. Never!
I’ve actually been thinking A LOT about you and the blog lately and I have so many exciting things in the works—from deliciously healthy recipes to super fun collaborations (both with some of my fave natural food brands and fellow #bossgirl dietitians), as well as a few epic giveaways.
Honestly, it’s kind of k-i-l-l-i-n-g me that I can’t share all the deets just yet, but it will be worth it. Cross my heart. 😉
You might already know about one of those deliciously healthy recipes if you saw my recent Instagram post featuring a decadent paleo double dark chocolate zucchini banana bread. Hubba, hubba, right?!
Basically, I decided to give one of my most popular recipes—these Grain-Free Double Dark Chocolate Zucchini Muffins from last year—a makeover. The muffins happen to be one of the very first recipes I shared on the site (woot woot!) and is one of the recipes that I often make and freeze for my husband and I for a quick, on-the-go snack, breakfast, or sweet treat.
BUT, like I said, I’m sharing that recipe until next week. Sorry! (Ugh, I know, the teasing just won’t stop!)
However, I have something better for you…Not necessarily better for you healthwise because the decadent paleo double dark chocolate zucchini bread does have a solid cup of vegetables in it, which makes arguably healthful…
Oops. Sorry! Sorry! I just can’t stop thinking or talking about them apparently. Seriously though. No more paleo chocolate zucchini bread talk until next week!
This superfood vegan vanilla coconut yogurt bowl topped with ALL the superfoods is delicious, equally healthful, and was featured on the Athleta Chi Blog last week.
Athleta is by far one of my favorite (if not my favorite) women’s activewear/athleisure brands. I have owned some of their workout bottoms and yoga tights for seriously nearly five years and they look as amazing as they did the day that I bought them. I also love their “Power of the She” philosophy and feel grateful that I get to share my nutrition nerdiness and passion for wellness as a contributing writer for their blog.
I you’ll love the superfood vegan vanilla coconut yogurt bowl I shared on their site and definitely didn’t want you to miss it, as it’s rich in gut healthy probiotics, refined sugar free, and packed with superfoods.
Plus, it’s a bowl recipe. And anything that can be eaten from a bowl always earns a recipe brownie points in my book. I’m not sure why, but eating out of bowls is just the best, right?
Especially when it’s something containing lots of toppings like this recipe. The bowl really lets you get everything neatly organized (read: Instagram photo worthy) before you stir it all into one big delicious and creamy concoction. Mmm.
I also love this bowl because it’s totally customizable. The ingredients listed are really more of a guide than a recipe that must be followed exactly so get creative and make it your own!
Also, if you tolerate dairy or don’t follow a vegan diet, feel free to use whichever brand of yogurt you love.
Need some help figuring out which yogurt is best? Here’s my tips to sort through the health claims and sort out the sugar bomb brands…
HOW TO PICK A HEALTHY YOGURT
When it comes to picking the best yogurt, here’s what I recommend My recommendations when picking a yogurt is to find a yogurt that’s , which hopefully you already know.
FIND THE FAT
You guys know the drill. Fat is what helps fill you up, enhances vitamin and nutrient absorption (especially those fat soluble ones like A, D, E, and K), lends a super creamy texture to foods, and hello it tastes way better. Plus, low-fat dairy or non-dairy products are so 1994.
SKIP THE SUGAR
While you might think this will require loads of label reading on your part, there’s a quick and dirty secret to finding the yogurts with the least added sugars…Yep. Go for the plain and simple! As tempting as it may be to choose the yogurts flavored with fruit, those are the ones that are often hiding teaspoons of unnecessary sugar. Not even the innocent-seeming vanilla flavored varieties are a safe bet so steer clear of the fancy flavors and add your own fresh or freeze-dried fruit and toppings like I’ve outlined in the recipe. 😉 Easy!
Greek-style yogurts contain more protein simply because they’re more concentrated. Try to find a brand with at least 7-15 grams of protein per serving. However, if you’re opting for a vegan, dairy-free yogurt like one made from coconut or almond milk, it might be relatively low in protein, but that doesn’t mean you have to skip it. Instead, add your own protein in the form of hemp hearts, plant-based protein powder (here are some of my go-to protein powders), nuts/nut butter, collagen protein
OPT FOR ORGANIC
Organic, grass-fed, all natural. Always. I know that’s not feasible for everyone all the time, but when it comes to animal products, I really do believe that organic is worth the extra cost. At the very least, make sure it’s not from an animal who was potentially treated with antibiotics or pumped full of growth hormones, pesticides, herbicides, other nasties. Blech!
GET CULTURED (A.K.A. PROBIOTICS FOR THE WIN)
OK here’s the deal, you can’t expect your yogurt to provide all the gut goodness you need (meaning you’ll also want to consider a supplement or other probiotic-rich foods like fermented vegetables, kombucha, miso, etc.), but you definitely want to make sure it contains SOME. Look for the words “live cultures” in the ingredient panel, especially the strains lactobacillus acidophilus, bifidus and lactobacillus bulgaricus. These guys are super important because they are what convert milk sugars (a.k.a. lactose) into the tangy yogurt you love. If your favorite brand contains more than those, consider it a bonus!
There you have it, friends. Go forth and get your yogurt bowls on! Remember, you can find the superfood vegan vanilla coconut yogurt bowl recipe here!
And while you’re over on the Athleta site, I highly recommend checking out the new Fall goods. Especially the redesigned Relay 2.0 Capris, which are ABSOLUTELY the best running, cross training, hiking bottoms everrrrrr. I own a solid 8-10 pairs and now these new ones have side pockets so HOLLA.
OK sorry end spiel. 🙂
YOUR THOUGHTS >>>
What do you like to add on top of your yogurt bowls? Do you have a go-to yogurt that you can’t live without? Do tell!
Annnnnnd what’s your absolute favorite pair of workout or yoga pants? I may be loyal to Athleta but I’m always open to hearing about noteworthy new brands so spill it, sista!
See you next week for that paleo zucchini banana bread recipe, yeah? Ow ow!
